"ROLAND BLYTH HEYS was associated with the paper making industry for nearly the whole of his professional career. He served his apprenticeship in the shops and drawing office of [[J. B. White and Brothers|Messrs. J. B. White and Brothers]] (later the [[Associated Portland Cement Co|Associated Portland Cement Company, Ltd]].), Swancombe, Kent, from 1894 to 1900, concurrently attending classes at the [[Gravesend Technical Institute]]. He was then appointed resident engineer to the [[Associated Portland Cement Co]] for whom he was engaged on extensions and electrification of various works until 1908, when he found his next employment as assistant engineer on the design and construction of the [[Empire Paper Mill]] at Greenhithe. On the completion of the mill he continued to act in the same capacity and was subsequently promoted to be chief engineer. After a brief engagement as chief engineer to [[G. H. Hedley|Messrs. G. H. Hedley, Ltd]]., Box Board Works, Loudwater, Bucks, he went to Bristol in 1918 to take up his final appointment as chief engineer at the St. Anne's Board Mill of the [[Imperial Tobacco Co|Imperial Tobacco Company, Ltd]]. His duties in this respect also entailed acting in an advisory capacity to other mills owned by the company.
