"ERNEST EDWIN JOYNT, who was born in Ireland at Ballina, was educated at the Methodist College, Belfast, and at the City of Dublin Technical Schools. On the completion of a three years' pupilage in the Inchicore works of the [[Great Southern and Western Railway]], in 1895, he continued in the service of the company as a junior draughtsman. Seven years later he was appointed chief designer, and in 1908 was promoted to be chief draughtsman. During his tenure of this post Mr. Joynt, in order to keep in touch with the most recent developments, travelled widely, visiting the works of the principal English and Irish railways besides those of prominent locomotive builders. He severed his connection with the [[Great Southern and Western Railway]] in 1919 on accepting an appointment as head of the mechanical engineering department of the City of Dublin Schools. In addition to being the head teacher the duties of this position entailed the organization of the department, the inauguration and charge of the day apprentice school, and the equipment of the workshop with modem apparatus. His retirement took place in 1943. He was the author of a paper on "Automatic Brakes" and of another on "Toothed Gearing" which he presented to the [[Inchicore Engineering Society]], and he was also a contributor to technical journals. Mr. Joynt had been a Member of the Institution since 1920. His death occurred on 18th October 1949 in his seventy-fourth year." | |||
