He was born in 1896 and served his apprenticeship at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, from 1911 to 1917, concurrently attending classes at the Woolwich Polytechnic. For a brief period he was a junior draughtsman in the Royal Carriage Department and in the last year of the 1914-18 war served overseas as a fitter staff sergeant with the Royal Field Artillery. He then continued his education at the Finsbury Technical College, taking courses in civil and mechanical engineering and graduating B.Sc. in 1921. After acting as technical assistant to the chief superintendent of the Royal Ordnance Factories at Woolwich, he became engineering assistant to the [[Ministry of Transport]] and was responsible to the resident engineer for the survey of a section of the London—Folkestone road and also the Sidcup by-pass. He began his career as a teacher in 1924 with the post of assistant master at the [[Sheerness Technical Institute]], where he had a varied responsibility, including the maintenance of machinery and training of students in tests, in addition to the teaching of workshop practice. After holding this position for five years he was appointed lecturer in mechanical engineering at Acton Technical College and took up his final appointment in 1938.
