Thereafter his entire career was spent in the drawing offices of several engineering firms. Beginning with Messrs. Cochran and Company and the North Eastern Marine Engineering Company, Ltd., Wallsend-on-Tyne, as a junior draughtsman, he joined, in 1905, the British Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, Ltd. (now the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company, Ltd.), and continued with them for some years in a similar capacity in the turbine department.
