MAURICE EYRE PERSSE STUDDERT, R.N., was educated at Aldenham School and in 1929 entered the Royal Naval Engineering College, Keyham, where he qualified as lieutenant (E.) three years later. He was posted to the staff of the chief inspector of gun mountings in the ordnance department of the Admiralty in 1940 with the rank of lieutenant-commander and was closely concerned with the design and manufacture of new fire control, being subsequently in charge of development work in that connection. He was promoted to commander (E.) in 1945 and selected to be head of the British Naval Gunnery Mission for Europe, with responsibility for collecting information on German scientific development as regards naval gunnery. In addition he was responsible for the control and co-ordination of future scientific work and in this respect rendered invaluable services to the Control Commission for Germany by establishing contacts with scientists in that country and establishing lasting bonds between British and German science. Commander Studdert, whose untimely death on 17th March 1951 terminated a career of great promise at the early age of forty, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1944." | |||
