FREDERICK GEORGE SMITH was born in 1883 and, after serving his apprenticeship with the Bedford Engineering Company, entered the drawing office of Messrs. Jessop and Appleby. Two years later, in 1906, he became chief draughtsman to Messrs. Wellman, Seaver and Head, Ltd., and began a long association with that firm and its successor, the Wellman, Smith, Owen Engineering Corporation, of Westminster, which lasted for thirty-eight years. He was promoted to the post of chief engineer in 1910 and was appointed managing director in 1916.
