He was born in 1885 and received his education at the East London and the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical Colleges. Entering the St. Rollux Works of the [[Caledonian Railway]], at Glasgow, as a pupil in 1901, he became a draughtsman four years later and remained in the service of the Company until 1911, during which latter period he acted as assistant teacher in mathematics and locomotive engineering for the Glasgow School Board. "DAVID JOHN SUTER was an Associate Member of the Institution for twenty-eight years, having been elected in 1919.
