He was born in 1914 and educated at Cambridge University, where he graduated with second-class honours in the Mechanical Science Tripos in 1935. He was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. He was born in 1914 and educated at Cambridge University, where he graduated with second-class honours in the Mechanical Science Tripos in 1935. On the conclusion of a three years' apprenticeship with the British Thomson-Houston Company at Rugby in 1938 his services were retained by the firm and after some training in the sales department he was appointed contract engineer. He relinquished this position in 1945 and took up his final appointment as assistant electrical engineer to Messrs. Mertz and McLellan, consulting engineers, Westminster."
