He received his education at the Pretoria High School and Witwatersrand Technical College, and served his time in the shops of the [[South African Railways]], at Pretoria, from 1918 to 1925, in whose service he continued as a journey man-fitter for a further eight years. After some experience as a draughtsman in the chief mechanical engineer's department, and as part-time lecturer at Pretoria Technical College, he joined the department of Labour and Social Welfare at Johannesburg, and was given the appointment of assistant inspector of factories (engineering). He was promoted to the post of deputy inspector at Port Elizabeth in 1939 and two months prior to his untimely death was advanced to the grade of senior inspector. Mr. Gardiner was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1933 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1938." | |||

"JAMES ARCHIBALD GARDINER, whose death occurred in March 1948, at the age of forty-five, spent the whole of his brief career in South Africa.
