1944 Obituary [1]

LUDWIG BACHRICH was born in Austria in 1873 and practically the whole of his professional career was spent in that country. After receiving his general education he commenced in 1891 a four years' course of study at a technical high school, where he was awarded the civil and mechanical engineering diploma. His first appointment was as engineer to the Breyer Filter Company. After holding this position for five years he went into business on his own account, and in 1900 established the firm of Bachrich and Company, general engineers.

Eleven years later he became managing director of the Ludwig Bachrich Tattendorfe Maschinenfabrik Company and finally in 1928 founded a private concern for the manufacture of kilns for drying timber. The products of these firms, all of which exploited Mr. Bachrich's patents, were largely exported and included crude oil and Diesel engines, as well as threshing machinery. He also specialized in the design and erection of generating stations and prefabricated timber houses. In addition his services as consultant were in request by numerous industrial firms.

After the occupation of Austria by Germany he came to England and established the Bachrich Construction Unit Company at Long Eaton, Nottingham; he also continued to practice as a consulting engineer. He was the chairman of the Long Eaton firm until his death, which occurred on 23rd October 1943. Mr. Bachrich was elected a Member of the Institution in 1942.
