1945 Obituary [1]
ERNEST SPIERS, whose death occurred on 18th January 1944, at the age of fifty-two, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1933. He obtained his technical training at the Leicester Technical School and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. G. Perry and Sons, patternmakers, and with Messrs. William Spiers and Company, hosiery machinists, of Leicester, from 1906 to 1911. He remained with the latter firm as draughtsman for a few months and for a brief period was employed on a similar capacity by Messrs. S. Russell and Sons, engineers, of the same town.
After three years' employment in the gauge department of Messrs. Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Company, Ltd., at their Elswick works, he returned to Messrs. Spiers in 1917 and resumed an association which lasted to the end of his career, during which period he was for some years in charge of the design and production of hosiery machinery. Subsequently, on the change-over of the works to the manufacture of aeroplane parts, jigs, and gauges, he was responsible for the design of special machinery. Mr. Spiers had been a member of the board of directors since 1925.
