"JAMES ALEXANDER BURNS was born in 1876 and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Bow, McLachlan and Company, Ltd., of Paisley, from 1891, remaining with them until 1899 when he joined the staff of Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd., in their London office.
He remained there as a draughtsman in the marine department for one year. He then joined the Worthington Pump Company, Ltd., as superintendent of erection, and later became assistant manager of their Birmingham office. In 1905 he returned to their London office, remaining there until 1910 when he became manager of the Glasgow office. Subsequently he went into business on his own account in the same city. Mr. Burns was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1910 and was transferred to Membership in 1913."
