COLIN SHAW was associated with the Sheffield firm of Messrs. Thomas Firth and Sons, and its successors, from his apprenticeship, which he served from 1909 to 1916, until the time of his death, which occurred on 12th December 1944 at the age of 49.
He received his technical education (which extended over a period of ten years, from 1912 to 1922) at the University of Sheffield. At the age of 21 he was made deputy foreman, but two years later he joined the Royal Navy and served as an engine room artificer.
