WILLIAM GRIMSHAW STONES retained a close connection with Blackburn during almost the whole of his career. He was born in 1869 and received his education at Owens College, Manchester, where he took courses in engineering. On the conclusion in 1896 of a six years' apprenticeship with [[P. S. WILLIAM GRIMSHAW STONES retained a close connection with Blackburn during almost the whole of his career. He was born in 1869 and received his education at Owens College, Manchester, where he took courses in engineering. On the conclusion in 1896 of a six years' apprenticeship with Mr. P. S. McCallum, at Manchester, he became a partner in the firm of Messrs. Stones and Stones, civil and mechanical engineers, for whom he acted as consultant in connection with water supply schemes.
In 1899 he was appointed manager and chief engine designer to the Smoke Prevention Company. After holding this position for ten years he went into practice as a consulting engineer, specializing in electrical and hydraulic work on estates and farms. Mr. Stones continued to practise up to the time of his death, which occurred in October 1944.
