On the conclusion of his training four years later, he received his first appointment as engineer in charge of the electricity generating station, at Dover, and a year later acted in a similar capacity at Hammersmith. In 1902 he joined the staff of the electricity works in Hampstead, and he held the position of assistant engineer until 1913, when he began his long connection with the borough of Tunbridge Wells, where, of recent years, he had been deputy chief engineer. Mr. Pownall, whose death occurred on 4th February 1947, was an Associate Member of the Institution for forty-four years, having been elected in 1903. "JOHN EDMUND POWNALL had a long record of service as an electrical engineer with the Corporation of Tunbridge Wells, dating from 1913.
He was born in 1880, and after a brief apprenticeship with Messrs. Ormston and Company, Ltd., of Southport, became, in 1896, a pupil and assistant to the late Mr. Ellis at the Bolton Corporation electricity works.
