ALLAN HOVEY STYRING, who was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1936, was in practice as a solicitor in Sheffield during almost the whole of his professional career. He was, however, keenly interested in engineering, and while prosecuting his studies in the law, attended classes in workshop practice and other engineering subjects at Sheffield University from 1902 to 1906. ALLAN HOVEY STYRING, who was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1936, was in practice as a solicitor in Sheffield during almost the whole of his professional career. He was, however, keenly interested in engineering, and while prosecuting his studies in the law, attended classes in workshop practice and other engineering subjects at Sheffield University from 1902 to 1906. He began to practice as a solicitor two years later, but during the war of 1914-18 he was employed by Messrs. Vickers, Ltd., on tool-room work and later by the Yorkshire Engine Company, for whom he was manager of a shell shop.
In addition to his private practice as a solicitor, Mr. Styring was for some years clerk to Worksop Rural District Council and from 1920 to 1930 he was a director of the Yorkshire Wiring and Motor Company. For many years he conducted experiments in his private workshop.
