EDGAR ROUSE SUTCLIFFE, O.B.E., Wh.Ex., was the founder and for over forty years managing director of [[Sutcliffe, Speakman and Co|Messrs. Sutcliffe, Speakman and Company, Ltd.]], engineers, Leigh, Lancashire. He received his technical education at the Leeds Institute of Science and Art, obtaining a Whitworth Exhibition, and served his apprenticeship with [[Fairbairn, Naylor, Macpherson and Co|Messrs. Fairburn, Naylor, Macpherson and Company]], of Leeds, from 1888 to 1893.


After three years' employment as draughtsman to [[Herbert Alexander and Co|Messrs. Herbert Alexander and Company]], engineers, of the same city, he became manager and held this position until 1900. In the following year he established the firm with which he was so long associated. In addition to their standard production of briquetting machines his firm made an important contribution to national defence by the manufacture of activated carbon for gas masks.
He was awarded the O.B.E. in 1943 in recognition of his services. Mr. Sutcliffe whose death occurred at Edenbridge, Kent, on 24th April 1945, in his seventy-first year, had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1900.

EDGAR ROUSE SUTCLIFFE, O.B.E., Wh.Ex., was the founder and for over forty years managing director of Messrs. Sutcliffe, Speakman and Company, Ltd., engineers, Leigh, Lancashire. He received his technical education at the Leeds Institute of Science and Art, obtaining a Whitworth Exhibition, and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Fairburn, Naylor, Macpherson and Company, of Leeds, from 1888 to 1893.
