"LAWRENCE EDWARD PETERSON BARKER was connected with the [[South African Railways]] during the whole of his professional career. He received his technical instruction at the Natal Technical School and subsequently obtained the National Advanced Technical certificate and National Engineering diploma of South Africa. After serving his apprenticeship in the coachbuilding department from 1927 to 1932 he continued in the same work for a further period of six years. He then became a draughtsman in the drawing offices of the chief mechanical engineer and reached his final position in 1940 when he was placed in charge of the drawing office at Germiston, with responsibility to the mechanical engineer. Mr. Barker, whose untimely death occurred on 11th October 1945 at the early age of thirty-six, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1944." | |||
