Richard Kenyon Barnes (c1912-1946)
1946 Obituary [1]
"RICHARD KENYON BARNES, B.Sc., Wh.Sc ., whose untimely death on 14th March 1946, terminated a promising career at the early age of thirty-four, had been since 1942 head of the Mechanical Engineering Department and senior assistant at Barrow-in-Furness Technical College. He will be remembered with great esteem by the students who attended the intensive training courses, as well as by his colleagues and the general body of pupils present at his lectures. He was educated at Hindley Grammar School and underwent a long course of technical training (extending to nine years), at the Wigan and District Mining and Technical College, where he had a distinguished career, obtaining first-class honours in engineering and the degree of B.Sc. (London), in addition to a Whitworth Scholarship and the College Diploma. After serving his apprenticeship with the Wigan Coal Corporation, Ltd., from 1927 to 1932, he became lecturer in mechanical engineering at Handsworth Technical College in 1936, a position he retained until his appointment at Barrow six years later. Mr. Barnes was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1942."
