NORMAN COULSON served a five years' apprenticeship in the works of Messrs. Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company, Ltd., of Jarrow, and received his technical education at the Jarrow Technical School.
In 1918 he joined the British India Steam Navigation Company, and served at sea for six years, rising from fifth to be second engineer. His next position, was that of engineer in charge of repairs at the Central Engine works, Singapore. In 1926 he was appointed mechanical engineer to the Singapore Municipal Commissioners. Later he was made superintendent of machinery, stores, and workshops.
