He was born at Oldham in 1867, and was educated at Greenacres Grammar School, Oldham. From 1882 to 1886 he attended Oldham Technical School, and concurrently served his apprenticeship at the works of [[Buckley and Taylor |Messrs. Buckley and Taylor]] of Oldham until 1888. When his time had expired, he remained with this company until 1891, and then became a charge hand with the [[Oldham Engineering Co]]. From 1894 until 1900 he was employed with [[John Hetherington and Co|Messrs. John Hetherington and Company]], Manchester, as leading millwright, and it was this firm that he left to enter the service of the College of Technology. During Mr. Hodgson's long career at the College he was responsible for the installation and maintenance of considerable equipment in the laboratories as well as supervising various extensions. "JAMES THOMAS HODGSON was connected with the Manchester College of Technology for over thirty years. He joined the College in 1900, and was appointed chief engineer and superintendent of works in 1912, a position he held until his retirement in 1932.
