Smiter joined the Chemical Engineering Corporation in 1929 supervising the design of synthetic ammonia plants, travelling to countries which included New York, France and Russia. | |||
It was during this time that he was sent to Beresnki in the Urals to supervise the construction and commissioning of a 200 ton/day synthetic ammonia plant and he often vividly recalled his brushes with the Soviet bureaucrats. Later he moved to Kowloon and organised the construction of a first synthetic ammonia plant in China, at Canton. | |||
Elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1934, and Member in 1943, Mr Smiter will be greatly missed by his many friends. | |||

Mr H. W. J. Smiter (Fellow), a former Managing Director of Chemical Construction (GB) Ltd, died on 10th July, aged 67.
Smiter joined the Chemical Engineering Corporation in 1929 supervising the design of synthetic ammonia plants, travelling to countries which included New York, France and Russia.
It was during this time that he was sent to Beresnki in the Urals to supervise the construction and commissioning of a 200 ton/day synthetic ammonia plant and he often vividly recalled his brushes with the Soviet bureaucrats. Later he moved to Kowloon and organised the construction of a first synthetic ammonia plant in China, at Canton.
Elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1934, and Member in 1943, Mr Smiter will be greatly missed by his many friends.
