Prof Michael Anthony Hogan (Fellow) of Dublin, died on Oct 6 (1971). Born in 1898, he entered University College, Dublin as a student of Civil Engineering in 1915. There he gained a first-class honours degree in 1918, and was awarded the Pierce Malone Scholarship. In 1929, following appointments at Imperial College and in Industry, he was awarded the DSc (Eng) by the University of London, on the basis of his published work. | |||
In 1938 he was appointed Professor of Mechanical Engineering in UCD, a post he held for 16 years. Two years later he was appointed a member of the Engineering Scientific Research Bureau and in 1941, became a Director of Mianrai Teoranta and from then, until 1956, was closely associated with mining exploration for coal and minerals. In addition to his academic work, Prof Hogan was deeply concerned with the development of Irish natural resources and served the community on two fronts, educational and economic. | |||
Prof Hogan also took an active interest in the affairs of the ICE of Ireland and in 1949 was elected President of the Institution. Prof Michael Anthony Hogan (Fellow) of Dublin, died on Oct 6 (1971). Born in 1898, he entered University College, Dublin as a student of Civil Engineering in 1915.
