A. FOULD-DUPONT died suddenly on October 8, 1913, at the age of sixty-five. In 1874 he entered the business of his father-in-law, whom he assisted in constructing the first two blast-furnaces in the district of Pompey, France. Having been prevented under the restrictions of the patent rights from manufacturing basic Bessemer steel, he founded the first open-hearth steelworks in the district, and as soon as the patents for the basic process had expired he established a basic Bessemer steelworks on a large scale, which began operations in 1895.
In 1898 he founded the Societe Anonyme des Hauts-Fourneaux, Forges et Acieries de Pompey, with a capital of eleven million francs. Under his presidency the works of the company were enlarged and modernised, the addition of an extensive rolling-mill plant and an electrical power station being among the improvements. He also interested himself in the iron-ore deposits of the Briey district, and founded the Societe des Mines de Fes. de la Mouriere, whose mines are at the present time among the most important of the district. He was a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, a Vice-President of the Comite des Forges et Mines de Fer de Meurthe et Moselle, and a Member of Council of the Comite des Forges de France. He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1879.
