BERTRAM LAWRANCE HURST whose death occurred on 19th May 1943, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1903 and was transferred to Membership in 1918; he was also a Member of the [Institution of Civil Engineers]].
He was born in 1875 and entered the works of Messrs. Joseph Westwood and Company, Ltd., bridge builders, of Millwall, as a pupil. After five years' training he held short appointments as draughtsman in the chief engineer's department of the Great Western Railway, and on the designing staff of Messrs. Westwood.
In 1897, however, he returned to the Great Western Railway's service as engineering assistant in the civil engineering department. Two years later he entered the Admiralty and served in a similar capacity until 1903. After four years at Portsmouth as assistant civil engineer in H.M. Dockyard, he established a business as a consulting engineer, specializing in structural steelwork and at the time of his death was senior partner in the firm of Messrs. B. L. Hurst and Peirce, Westminster.
