of Shrewsbury

Thomas Burr, a London plumber by trade, moved to Shrewsbury in 1813. In 1820 he patented 'Burr’s Lead Squirting Press', which revolutionised the production of lead pipes. He bought Kingsland Mill from Ann Bage and developed it as a lead works.[1]

It has been suggested that Burr's process was not quite new, as his method was described in a patent taken out by Joseph Bramah in 1797 [2]
