James Wallace - Scottish engineer
1852 Appointed as engineer to the Sydney Railway. 'Immediately after my report of 20th November, I took measures to make known the wants of the Directors, not only in the offices of some of the principal engineers here, but also to the public, by means of the advertisement, of which I enclose a copy, and which was inserted three times in each - the Times, the Railway Times, and Herepath's Railway Journal. The applications by letter have in consequence been extremely numerous, the greater part however of a second-rate character, and the full consideration of the whole was appointed about the 20th ultimo (December), from which time until the 13th instant the applications were carefully considered by myself, and again at that time considered with the aid of my friends, Mr. Peto and Mr. Betts, gentlemen whose large experience in such matters in this country and upon the continent render their opinion most valuable; and I am now glad to acquaint you that I have very confidently accepted the services of Mr. James Wallace, a gentleman who presents himself to me, from all that I can learn and observe as by far the fittest party that the proceedings of the last two months have brought before me, and who I have every reason to believe will discharge the duties of his office with a zeal and ability quite equal to the expectations of the Board. I enclose copies of some testimonials of Mr. Wallace from Mr. R. Stephenson, also from his acting partner, Mr. Borthwick, from Mr. Peto, Mr. Butts, Mr. Fane, and Mr. Roney, which, doubtless, will prove of some interest to the Directors of the Company.'[1]
1857 February 29th. Resigned from the Sydney Railway and replaced by John Whitton.
1913 Mention of marriage of Robert Bruce Wallace, youngest son of the late James Wallace, C.E., (Railway Construction).[2] There is a Robert Bruce born 1881 at Albury NSW, the son of James Wallace and his wife Agnes H. Wallace.
