Simultaneously he read for the science degree of the University of London, and graduated recently as a Bachelor of Science. An important appointment had recently been offered to him by a London firm, and arrangements were being made for a journey to Sweden, with a view to undertaking some research work, but illness unfortunately overtook him, and his untimely death at the age of twenty-eight has ended what promised to be a useful and brilliant career. | |||

WILLIAM RALPH BATES, B.Sc., A.R.S.M., died in London on May 14, 1923.
Educated privately, and at the Orme Boys' School, Mr. Bates worked for some years as an analytical chemist at the ironworks of the Shelton Iron, Steel and Coal Company.
Later he studied for four years at the Royal School of Mines, South Kensington, and obtained his Associateship.
