1923: The British de Forest Phonofilms Company, Limited was formed by Cyril Elwell with a capitalisation of £50,000, with Elwell himself as Managing Director.
The business was licenced to exploit Lee de Forest's US Phonofilm patents across the British Empire (less Canada), an early technology for including sound on film recordings.
The firm operated out of the Kingsway offices of C.F. Elwell, and set up what were effectively the first talking picture studios in the United Kingdom in Clapham, South London.
