"PERCY ARTHUR HUGHES served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies, Ltd., Ipswich, from 1909 to 1914 and concurrently attended classes at the Ipswich Technical School. He then joined H.M. Forces and served in France with the rank of staff sergeant fitter. As the result of a wound in 1916 he was discharged a year later and returned to Messrs. Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies to take up the post of technical assistant.
In 1919 he went out to India on receiving an appointment as assistant works manager in the mathematical instrument works of the Government of India at Calcutta, and subsequently he became apprentice supervisor to the East India Railway Co. He was responsible for some 1,500 apprentices and in addition acted as lecturer at the Jamalpur Technical School. In 1924 he again renewed his association with Messrs. Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies, for whom he was engaged as assistant works manager until 1927 when he was back in India as assistant mechanical engineer at the constructional works of the Lloyd Barrage. His next post was that of resident manager and engineer to the Travancore Minerals Co.
During the 1939-45 war he was attached to the Indian Ordnance Service, successively filling the positions of director of factory recruitment and superintendent of the ammunition factory at Kirkee. Finally, in 1944, he returned to take charge of the Travancore Minerals Co.
Mr. Hughes, whose death occurred on 30th June 1950, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1929."
