HENRY BURDETT HEDERSTEDT, born at Southampton in 1833, died at Bickley on the 29th April, 1915.
Early in his career he was sent out to Asiatic Turkey by his brother-in-law, the late Sir R. M. Stephenson, Assoc. Inst. C.E., on the survey of proposed railways.
He then joined the staff of the Madras Railways and subsequently became Chief Engineer of the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway, a position which he occupied nearly 20 years. In this capacity he was responsible for many important works, notably the Dufferin Bridge over the Ganges at Benares. In 1865 he presented to The Institution an account of the drainage of Paris.
Mr. Hederstedt was elected an Associate of the Institution on the 12th January, 1864, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 18th December, 1868.
