1908 Apprenticed to Clayton and Shuttleworth of Lincoln
1908 Moved to the Great Northern Railway
1914 Engaged in outdoor railway testing work at Doncaster
WWI Joined Royal Navy as leading mechanic. Then moved to RNAS.
1915 Transferred to RFC. Put in charge of the aero-engine repair shops at Pont de l'Arche. Under Fell as Chief Engineer, the workshops innovated as well as repaired engines. Rose to rank of Lieut-Colonel. Awarded DSO.
1919 Awarded OBE.
1919 Appointed chief of aero-engine design and research at the Air Ministry. Developed Type Approval Tests to establish engine reliability. Commissioned work on his idea for a "combined cycle unit" engine at Peter Hooker Ltd
Associate fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society
1920 Married Mary D M H Walker in Knaresborough[2]

1928 Joined Rolls-Royce as technical assistant to the managing director
