Sydney Smith Marner was born in 1883 and obtained his technical education at the Borough Polytechnic.
He served five years' apprenticeship in pattern-making and brassfounding, and subsequently spent three years in learning automobile engineering with Scott, Stirling & Co., Ltd., Twickenham.
He then occupied various positions in general engineering, and was eventually appointed salesman to the London Depot of the Albion Motor Car Co., Ltd., a post which he occupied for twelve years.
Although for the last five years of his life he was an invalid, he retained his interest in engineering and recently invented a reversible propeller for marine sets.
He died on March 26th, 1922.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1913.
