Gabriel Davis of Abingdon were makers of steam engines for marine use; built steam screw-driven vessels for use on The Thames.
1878 Lacey Robert Johnson was appointed manager of Messrs. G. Davis and Son's engine works in London, and later at their new works at Abingdon.
1882 Edwin Dawson Clark joined the company; during his eighteen months employment with the company he was both draughtsman and assistant manager.
