SHANKAR BALWANT DESHPANDE, B.A. ,had a long connection with the electrical side of mechanical engineering, and had spent the whole of his professional career in India, where he was born in 1893. He was educated at the College of Engineering in Poona and at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, obtaining the electrical technology diploma.
On the completion of brief periods of practical training he entered the Government ammunition factory at Kirkee and served as assistant electrical engineer for two years. His next post, which he held from 1921 to 1927, was that of senior technical engineer to the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company, Ltd., in Bombay.
