He then spent two years in the paper mills of Messrs. George Henderson and Co., of Bonnington, as assistant engineer and subsequently as chief engineer; and on leaving in 1898 he went to India to take up an engagement with Messrs. Jessop and Co., Ltd., civil and mechanical engineers, Calcutta, as assistant engineer and draughtsman, becoming later works manager and superintending engineer. In these posts he was concerned in important engineering work of very varied description in different parts of the country.

About three years later he was appointed general manager to the Britannia Engineering Co., Ltd., Titaghur, Bengal, and this position he held up to the time of his death which occurred in October 1925.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1907.
