WILLIAM THOMAS FAWDON TRUNCHION, Wh.Ex., who was born in Bedford in 1872, spent the whole of his life in that town, where he was well known as a prominent engineer.
He was educated at Bedford Grammar School and served his time in the shops and drawing office of Grafton and Company, Ltd., crane makers, from 1888 to 1894, in which latter year he obtained a Whitworth Exhibition. After two years as a junior in the drawing office he was promoted to be chief draughtsman.
In 1901 he became assistant manager, and four years later was entrusted with the sole management of the Vulcan Works.
He retired in 1937 after over forty-eight years' service with the firm. Mr. Trunchion took a keen interest in the education of the young engineer and had been a member of the committee of management of the North Bedfordshire College of Further Education for some forty years. He was also director and secretary of the Engineering and Allied Employers' Bedfordshire Association.
