Robert Mudge Marchant (1821-1902)
1821 Robert Mudge was born in Chilcompton, Somerset, son of William and Sarah Marchant, farmer[1]
Apprenticed to Mr Glennie (?) CE, resident engineer at Box Tunnel
1841 Married(1) Emmeline Montague Orton in Bristol[2]
2 years in charge of works on the Bristol and Exeter Railway
c.1845 One of the Resident Engineers on the South Devon Railway
c.1846 Resident engineer on the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway
1849 Elected as an Associate of the Institution of Civil Engineers; of 17 1/2 Great George St, Westminster.
1851 Bankruptcy of William Williams and Robert Mudge Marchant, both of No. 18, Great George-street, Westminster, and of No. 29, Netherfield-road North, Liverpool, and of Campden, in the county of Gloucester, Contractor for Public Works, and Builders, Dealers and Chapmen[3]
1854 Robert Mudge Marchant, Contractor for Public Works in London, and elsewhere in Great Britain, and Belgium, gave notice, that he had ceased to be a Partner of the firm of Welton and Marchant, Contractors for Public Works in Belgium, of which firm he and Mr. William Welton, Timber Merchant, in London, were the sole Individual Partners.[4]
Presumably moved to New Zealand at some point.
1867 James Ball Mannix, of Limerick, Ireland, has given notice at the Office of the Commissioners of his intention to proceed with his application for Letters Patent for the invention of "improvements in the permanent way of railways." — A communication to him from abroad by Robert Mudge Marchant, James Richard Davies, and John Allman Marchant, all of Wellington, New Zealand.[5]
