WALTER EDWARD BUTCHER was connected with the British Thomson-Houston Company, Ltd., for thirty-three years.
He was born in 1873 and entered the works of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway in 1888 as an apprentice under Mr. William Stroudley, M.I.Mech.E.
In 1894 he joined the Trusty Gas and Oil Engine Works as a draughtsman, and a year later he was appointed draughtsman and assistant estimator to Messrs. Beck and Company, Ltd., hydraulic engineers.
After a brief period on motor car design with Messrs. New and Mayne, he entered the drawing office of Messrs. Ferranti, Ltd., Hollinwood.
Subsequently he joined the staff of Messrs. Crompton and Company at Chelmsford, where he remained until his appointment as commercial engineer to the British Thomson-Houston Company at Rugby in 1902. Eight years later he was transferred to the London office of the firm.
Mr. Butcher was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1891, and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1898.
His death took place on 14th August 1935.
