1818 W. H. Tilley began making gas lamps in Stoke Newington, and in Shoreditch in the 1830s.
William Henry Tilley (1834-1896) developed a successful gas fitting and plumbing business.

By 1909 the business had become Tilley Brothers[3]
1909 The Tilley High-Pressure Gas Syndicate Ltd. was incorporated as manufacturers of high pressure gas lighting equipment; it was operated by Frederick Charles Tilley, William Henry Tilley and others [4] but whether and when it incorporated Tilley Brothers is not known.
1915 The company had employed between 20 and 250 men since 1895.[5]
By 1924 both companies seem to have been subsumed in the Tilley Lamp Co
