1979 Peter and Nadine Harrington formed HGI as a partnership, with the express aim of building a range of small petrol and diesel generators for the plant hire market.

The company grew rapidly.

1987 Harrington Generators and Power Equipment Ltd was formally established; manufacturing started in a purpose-built factory in Wirksworth.

2000 The company's name was changed to Harrington Generators International Ltd. Shortly afterwards, the Company gained ISO 9000 for the design and manufacture of its products as well as its management systems.

2003 another new factory on an adjacent site was purchased.

2006 The founders retired from the generator business; the Company was acquired by the engineering group FKI plc

2008 FKI was acquired by Melrose plc
