1866 The Parkesine Company Ltd was formed in Hackney Wick to make Parkesine, the original "plastic", invented by Alexander Parkes. George Maule (of the dyestuffs firm Simpson, Maule and Nicholson) was the principal shareholder; Daniel Spill (1832-87) was works manager.
