Early 20th century: Atlas Chain Co made anchor chains
Faced with the need to cut the grass around the factory, Charles Vernon Pugh, owner of the company, invented the 12 inch Atco Standard 9 Blade mower, the world' first mass produced petrol-engine powered mower.
1921 Pugh decided to focus the company on making Atco Mowers but died before it was marketed.
The original machine is displayed at the British Lawnmower Museum on Merseyside.
