1946 Yarrow Admiralty Research Department (YARD) was established to improve research on naval propulsion machinery following experience in the Second World War. The organisation consisted of engineers from Yarrow and Co. Ltd. and English Electric Co. Ltd who, together with representatives of the Admiralty's Engineer-in-Chief's Department, produced recommendations for the improvement of propulsion machinery design.
