John Waddell (1875-2nd December 1961)

1875 Born in Greenock

Educated at Lombard School, Charlton

Electrical education at Goldsmith's College

c.1889 Joined Johnson and Phillips at Charlton where he became associated with B. M. Drake and G. M. Gorham and joined them in their new enterprise to provide the batteries needed for the electrification of large English houses.

1891 Living in Greenwich: John Waddell 40, seagoing marine engineer, with Ann Waddell 34, John Waddell 15, electrical engineer's clerk, Jane Waddell 13, William Waddell 11, George Waddell 9, James Waddell 7, Marion Waddell 2, Helen Waddell 11 Months

1898 Supervised the move of the plant of D. P. Battery Co to Bakewell

1900 Took over the management of the Bakewell plant and gradually rose up the organization, eventually becoming chairman.

1911 Boarding in Bakewell, general manager of an electric storage battery manufacturer

1961 Died at Bakewell aged 86

1961 Obituary

'We regret to record the death on December 2 of Mr. John Waddell, who had been associated with the D. P. Battery Company Ltd., since its foundation in 1895, retiring from the chairmanship in 1956, although remaining on the board. Mr. Waddell assisted with the pre-production tests of the first D. P. batteries between 1888 and 1895, and when manufacturing premises were acquired at Bakewell in 1898 he assisted in installing the plant. From 1900 to 1961 he was continually at Bakewell, successively as works manager, general manager, managing director and chairman of the company.'
