Louis Joseph Vicat (1786-1861)

French engineer who made important contributions in the fields of cement technology and suspension bridge construction using iron wire.

Vicat envisaged the method of installing suspension bridge wires by 'air-spinning', later perfected by John Augustus Roebling. It appears that his method was used on two bridges completed in 1840, namely Roche-Bernard and Tours.[1]

1786 Born 31 March at Nevers

1861 Died on 10 April at Grenoble
