Lawrence Hargreaves
Lawrence Hargreaves (1850-1915)
Born on 29th January 1850 at Greenwich but emigrated to New South Wales in 1866.
Employed as a engineer-draughtsman
Joined the Sydney Observatory
From 1883 he dedicated his efforts to aviation living off a private income. He is famous for his design of box kite which became very successful and was the basis of many other designs including those of Samuel Cody. He refused to patent this design and made it freely available to other experimenters.
He gave two lectures which are detailed in the Aeronautical Journal in April 1897 and July 189.
Returned to England in 1899 but went back to Australia after six months.
He died on 16th July 1915
