Alfred Arkell Hardwick (1878-1912)

1912 December 15th. 'Two further names have to be added to the growing list of Englishmen who have lost their lives through disasters in the air, namely Lieutenant Wilfrid Parke, R.N., Naval Wing of the Royal Flying Corps, and Mr. Arkell Hardwick, constructor for the makers of the Handley-Page monoplane. They left the Hendon aviation ground at noon, yesterday, in gusty weather, hoping to reach Oxford, and after a turn Harrow, the machine was up-ended by a gust of wind and crashed down on the Wembley Golf Links within a few yards of several players. Once, in its descent, it stated, it was righted, and it was evident that down to the last fraction of a second Lieutenant Parke retained presence of mind and made every possible effort to regain an even keel.'[1]
