"JOHN JULES SAUTTER was formerly the managing director of Messrs. Philip and Son, Ltd., Dartmouth, shipbuilders and engineers, and had been associated with the firm since 1900.
He was educated privately in Switzerland and received his technical training at the Goldsmith's Institute, London. He served his time in the Nine Elms locomotive works of the London and South Western Railway from 1893 to 1897 and for the next three years was occupied as a junior draughtsman at the Dockhead Ironworks of Messrs. T. and J. Hosking, London. He then went to Dartmouth and began his long connection with Messrs. Philip and Son with the post of assistant manager. Five years later he was made engineer manager, in which capacity he was responsible for the equipment of many vessels with engines and machinery as well as on repairs, on behalf of private firms and government departments, including the Admiralty, and in 1938, he became managing director of the firm. Mr. Sautter, whose death occurred on 13th March 1951 at the age of seventy-three, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1914."
