Adshead's 1851 map shows 'Pincoffs & Co's Chemical Works' on Gloucester Street, close to Oxford Road Station. It backed onto the Rochdale Canal, and was bounded on the west by the Caledonia Foundry of Glasgow & Co, and on the east by a coal yard.

1857 Simon Pincoffs was granted a provisional patent for 'treating of madder, &c.'

1869 'CAUTION.— Whereas Messrs.PINCOFFS & CO., of this city, are the owners of certain Letters Patent, granted to Mr. Pincoffs and Dr. Schunck, for "Improvements in the treatment of madder and other plants of the same species, and of their products, for the purpose of obtaining dyeing materials," under which Messrs. Pincoffs and Co. manufacture and sell the article called "Commercial Alizarine;" and whereas the said Messrs. Pincoffs and Co. have reasons for believing that some party or parties, either in ignorance of the existence of such letters patent, or violation of the privileges thereby granted, is or are committing infringements of the same, to the serious injury of the said Messrs. Pincoffs and Co. Now, in order to avoid the possibility of any parties setting up the plea of want of knowledge of such letters patent, we have been directed to give this public notice that the same are in full force and effect, and that ii is the positive determination of Messrs. Pincoffs and Co. to commence legal proceedings against any party parties guilty of such infringements, either by manufacturing or using such Commercial Alizarine, as soon as the necessary evidence can be procured for that purpose.
